　　The formation of refugees has a long history. To ensure the basic rights and status of refugees, the United Nations in 1951 refugees and stateless persons status plenipotentiary conference, and adopted the convention on refugees.

　　Organization of African unity in 1969 drafted on African refugees convention, on June 20, 1974 for its members through effective, and the day as "Africa refugee day".

　　Africa has the largest number of refugees, asylum in order to thank them for Africa and the international community to the problem of refugees wider attention, in December 2000, the United Nations general assembly unanimously passed a resolution, decision, since 2001, June 20, will be a year as a "world refugee day".
